Using numbers or numerals

More than once I have found myself in the situation of using «14» or «fourteen» in texts, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using numbers? What about numerals?

Let’s remember that users do not read, they scan the text looking for the information they need at that moment, so we know that using different typographic styles such as bold, underlined, colours… attract eye fixation, so numerals, too.

In addition to retaining eye movement from the reader, numerals represent facts: «72% of people have answered answer b». The advantage is also that exact numerals give more credibility.

So, if we want the number to go unnoticed, we will write it literally; on the other hand, if we want it to stand out, to give credibility, we will use numerals. And if we use bold numerals, there will be a 100% chance that it will stand out from the rest of the text (totally invented data).

Articles & Ideas

There are plenty of comprehensive pieces on the practice of product design out there—our own Kyle Turman has written an excellent post on the Pillars of Digital Product Design—but there’s a crucial layer of thinking that can sometimes elude the design process itself, partially because it’s so obvious that it’s hiding in plain sight.
